It’s important to have a coordinated and systematic approach to Occupational health and safety in the workplace. A business needs to understand their legal obligations relating to the workplace health and safety act and continually improve and maintain compliance to ensure they are looking after the health and safety of their employees. This will ensure they are able to identify, manage and eliminate hazards whilst reducing employee injuries and time off work. This is by no means and exhaustive list, but here are some thought starters:

  • Is health and safety part of your induction program?
  • Do you have safety targets as part of your business plan?
  • Is their a process for dealing with injured workers?
  • Do you have employees trained in first aid?
  • Where can you employees access health and safety information?
  • Do you have a Health and safety committee that includes all areas and levels of the business?
  • Do you run tool box talks?
  • Do you undertake risk assessments regularly throughout the business?
  • Do you have Standard operating procedures where required?
  • Do you have a HAZMAT system?
  • Do your employees have the right equipment to perform their jobs safely?
  • Have you undertaken ergonomics testing?
  • Do you have break reminders set up on computers?
  • Do your employees have the right training to perform their role? including licencing?
